Hi Guys
Is there any way to find out how many shots your Canon DSLR has taken in its lifetime ?

Hi Graham,
Is the number of photos indicated ny the 'DSC' number the camera automatically assigns to images as you take them? I'm not sure, just a thought.

Hi Graham,
I've been doing some research recently ahead of buying a Canon DSLR. I recall coming across a few references to this issue in various photography forums, and I believe that it depends on the model of Canon DSLR you have. Models at the higher end of the range (5D, 1D) apparently have a counter which can be accessed by a Canon engineer (or at least, someone with Canon's service diagnostics software!) via a PC connection, but the less expensive ones do not. The image filename is unfortunately not a reliable indicator because this can be reset at any time by the user.
What model do you have? I'd try searching for your specific camera in some of the photography forums: you should find some useful information.

am suprised no one has answered this...
When you switch on the camera and open the picture viewer the counter comes up with a number like 100-0398. When this reaches 100-9999 the next number is 101-0001 and so on, my 450D is at 102-0006 at the moment. Am not sure what happens if the counter is reset

Why not look in the EXIF data, unless you have a 300D (and lucky!) it'll be in the extended stuff.
